The History of Tourisme Côte-Nord

More Than 50 Years Serving Côte-Nord Tourism

More Than 50 Years Serving Côte-Nord Tourism

Manicouagan’s regional tourism association was founded on May 13, 1971, in Hauterive as the region’s first tourism organization. Its original aims were to promote tourism development and bring together private and public individuals and organizations interested in developing the Manicouagan and Outardes areas and the surrounding towns and municipalities. In 1978, the general manager, Mr. John Davis, announced an official restructuring of the Association and launched a summit in Sherbrooke to restructure Québec’s tourism industry and encourage the creation of new regional tourism associations across the province. The four-year pilot project on the Côte-Nord helped inspire the creation of tourism associations in other regions of Québec after producing positive results.

On February 8, 1982, supplementary letters patent extended the mandate to the entire area from Sacré-Cœur and Tadoussac to Îlets-Caribou, including Manic 5. At the time, the organization continued to pursue the following mandates: raising awareness, informing, mobilizing, defining, implementing and establishing initiatives; acting as the tourism sector’s key representative to government ministries; and ultimately securing grants and investments essential to its development and survival.

Mr. Davis remained at the helm of the Manicouagan regional tourism association until 1995.

Stronger Together

Stronger Together

On November 21, 2013, the two boards of directors met for the first time to discuss creating a joint visitor guide and a new brand identity.

On March 24, 2014, Tourisme Manicouagan and Tourisme Duplessis launched a shared brand called Tourisme Côte-Nord. The associations jointly invested $500,000 in marketing initiatives to promote the region. The organizations nevertheless remained two separate entities.

On December 15, 2015, the arrival of the first employee jointly employed by both regional tourism associations revived the idea of merging them into a single organization.

On May 20, 2021, after several years of work by the boards of Tourisme Manicouagan and Tourisme Duplessis, the two Côte-Nord regional tourism associations merged to form a single association covering the entire Côte-Nord territory, from Tadoussac to Blanc-Sablon and from Anticosti to Kawawachikamach.
