Before you arrive at the first village of Minganie, a hiking trail with interpretive panels on the local animal and plant life leads to a small hydroelectric generating station. At low tide in early June, the nearby bridge is a great clamming spot. Further along, climb up to the cross facing the sea: this headland is the best place for miles around from which to admire the expansive vistas of land and sea. The name Sheldrake comes from an old British word for the American merganser, also known as a sawbill.
