Joseph Hébert’s historic home on Île de la Passe bears witness to a bygone island culture and way of life. At the age of 15, Hébert decided to try his luck as a fisher and sealer on the north shore of the St. Lawrence. When the federal government began regular postal service to the Lower North Shore in 1879, Hébert was the man who got the job. He made the 720 km journey from Blanc-Sablon to Pointe-aux-Esquimaux (today Havre-Saint-Pierre) at least twice each winter. Hébert continued to deliver the mail, winter and summer, for the rest of his life—nearly 35 years.
