Description
The landscape around the Innu village of Ekuanitshit is made up entirely of ocean, forests and rivers. Caught between tradition and the modern world, the Innu here still speak their native language, Innu-aimun. Artisans, artists, entrepreneurs, hunters and anglers make up this dynamic community on the shores of the Mingan River. In summer, on the west bank of the river near the bridge there is a great swimming spot. There are several areas along the river where visitors can stop and relax, have a picnic and admire the scenery. The name Ekuanitshit is based on the remark of an elder, who once said that when you look at the village from Mingan Island, it looks like a “place surrounded by mountains.” The church, decorated entirely with Innu artwork, impresses visitors from around the world with its charm and authenticity. Be sure to visit the newly opened Maison de la culture innue (House of Innu Culture).
