8 suggestions to make the most of the North Shore winter season

Winter in Côte-Nord is truly something special, and I'm sure you'll love it. Here are a few ideas to make the most of the season.

Enjoy the Northern Lights

It's an incredible spectacle. Find a spot away from city light pollution, like an overlook, a beach, or a park, and prepare to be amazed by the dancing lights in the sky. Pro tip: download the My Aurora Forecast app to get alerts on the best chances to see this phenomenon in your area.

Try Cross-Country Skiing or Tubing

Whether you're a beginner or a pro, there's always a trail that suits you. The region's two ski resorts offer these activities, and several cross-country ski clubs are scattered across the area as well.

Explore Snowy Trails with Snowshoes

These trails are meticulously maintained by volunteers throughout the season. Around Port-Cartier and Sept-Îles, I suggest the Girard à Vachon trail, the Chemin de Marie, the Croix des Indiens trail, the Nature Trail to Aylmer-Whittom Park, and the Petit-Havre de Matamec trail. For a comprehensive list of the region's trails, check out Les Sentiers de la Côte website.

Try Snowmobiling

Looking for a bit more adrenaline? The TQ3 federated trail and local routes are perfect for exploring the breathtaking landscapes in a new way. I recommend using the iMotoneige app for trail conditions and accessible service points. If you're like me and don't own a snowmobile, you can always rent one to experience it at least once.

Test Your Skills at Ice Fishing

This activity will test your patience and cold tolerance! Find a frozen lake, set up your gear, and enjoy a peaceful day trying to catch fish. Some places even offer introductory sessions.

Discover Local Crafts and Indulge in Regional Delicacies

Here are two secrets to warm your body and soul. First, dive into local crafts: hand-knitted blankets, wooden sculptures, and unique pottery exude authenticity and tell the region's story. Then, treat yourself to local delights: smoked salmon paired with fir jelly and a boreal fruit beer. These two elements are your best allies for a cozy winter experience.

Join Festivals and Events

Check out what's happening during winter. Some places host winter festivals, Christmas markets, and other celebrations. It's a fun way to soak up the Côte-Nord vibe. I recommend visiting the events calendar on our website.

Relax and Unwind

Sometimes, the best thing to do is simply enjoy the winter days. Find a cozy cabin or unique accommodation, grab a good book, and savor a cup of Labrador tea while watching the snow fall.
